Recapping Week 1 of Kids Bike Camp!

Our very first Summer Kids Camp of the season is officially in the books, and what a week it was! From June 22–26, the Tyson Recreation Center in Hillsboro served as our home base for five action-packed days of cycling, learning, and exploring.
Cycle Oregon Kids Bike Camp is all about building confidence, independence, and essential bike safety skills for riders ages 8–12. Every single day, our campers built on the previous day’s lessons—mastering riding techniques, handling their bikes in transit situations, and practicing top-tier safety.
By the end of the week, this amazing crew logged a whopping 34.5 miles on two wheels (plus a 3-mile hike on Wednesday)!
Here is a look back at some of our favorite moments from the week:
Bike Fun With New Friends

A Visit to Washco Bikes Community Bike Shop
Safety isn’t just about how you ride—it’s about knowing your machine! The kids took a trip to WashCo Bikes, where they got hands-on and learned all about bikes including essential bike repair and maintenance skills.

Exploring Jackson Bottom Wetlands
On Wednesday, we added some hiking to saddle time. We rode out to Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, where the kids checked out the beautiful wetlands and spent time learning inside the Nature Center

Just Regular Camp Stuff
When we weren’t riding, we kept the energy high with skills training such as how to lock bikes securely, lots of arts and crafts, giving everyone a chance to learn and express their creative sides.

A Surprise Visit from the Hillsboro Hops!
The Hillsboro Hops pro baseball team, a High-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks dropped by the park for one of our activity days. Everyone played games, stayed active, and soaked up the beautiful summer sun.

Multi-Modal Explorers: Navigating the Train
Independence means knowing how to combine pedal power with public transit. The campers learned exactly how to safely bring their bikes aboard the train, opening up a whole new world of adventure possibilities.

The Ultimate Reward: The Ice Cream Ride
You can’t have a summer bike camp without a sweet treat. We took a group ride to grab some ice cream, practicing our neighborhood navigation and bike skills along the way.

Thank you so much to our incredible campers, our supportive community partners – Johnson RV, Hoover Family Foundation & Nike Community Impact Fund– and the wonderful parents who helped make Week 1 such a massive success.
