Rogue River Greenway

As Cycle Oregon Rally rolls through Southern Oregon this year, we’ll spend time riding on and alongside something bigger than a route on a map. Portions of our week will overlap with the Rogue River Greenway—a community-driven trail system quietly reshaping how people experience the Rogue Valley by bike and on foot. We’re grateful to the Rogue River Greenway Foundation for sharing their story and for the long-term vision, care, and collaboration behind every mile they’ve built. Their work reflects the spirit of Rally itself: bringing people together, celebrating place, and investing in a future where cycling connects communities long after the event moves on.

Paving the Way: How the Rogue River Greenway Foundation Is Connecting Communities, Trails, and Cyclists

On a crisp fall morning along the banks of the Rogue River, the future of Southern Oregon’s trail network is quietly taking shape. Since 2007, the Rogue River Greenway Foundation—an all-volunteer nonprofit with a big vision—has been working to stitch together one of the most scenic cycling and walking corridors in the state. Their mission: build a continuous greenway trail connecting Grants Pass to Ashland, linking communities, parks, and people along the iconic Rogue.

For cyclists, this effort is more than infrastructure. It’s the promise of a safer, more connected, more inspiring way to experience Oregon’s wild beauty.

Where Vision Meets the River

The Rogue River Greenway concept began as a simple idea: create a multi-use pathway that parallels the river and Highway 99, opening new recreational opportunities while preserving the natural landscape. Over time, that idea has grown into a robust, phased plan that could become one of Oregon’s most beloved long-distance cycling routes.

Today, completed segments near Rogue River, Gold Hill, and other pockets of the valley are already drawing cyclists, runners, local families, and visitors. These short stretches offer something more than pavement—glimpses of what a fully connected greenway could be: peaceful, car-free riding framed by oak woodlands, river overlooks, and the hum of the Rogue itself.

But the Foundation knows the work isn’t easy. Building a continuous trail means navigating land agreements, environmental stewardship, funding gaps, and long timelines. Yet their momentum hasn’t slowed.

A Community-Powered Effort

What sets the Rogue River Greenway Foundation apart is its grassroots spirit. Volunteers, donors, local businesses, government agencies, and everyday trail users have come together to help turn the Greenway from concept to concrete. Partnerships with Jackson and Josephine counties, state parks, the Oregon Department of Transportation and local governments have been critical in moving individual segments forward.

“There’s a sense of ownership here,” says one Foundation volunteer. “People know this trail will outlive all of us. It’s something we’re building for future generations.”

Community events like the annual Ride the Rogue, local fundraisers, and advocacy campaigns have kept the dream alive through economic cycles and political shifts. Every mile completed is a testament to collaboration and persistence.

Why It Matters for Cyclists

For the cycling community, the Greenway isn’t just another trail—it’s a game-changer.

Safety and Access

The route provides an alternative to high-traffic corridors, making cycling more accessible to riders of all ages and abilities.

Connectivity

Once finished, the Greenway will link small towns, parks, campgrounds, and cultural sites, creating a seamless cycling experience through the Rogue Valley. The Rogue River Greenway will ultimately connect to the Bear Creek Greenway, a 20-mile trail that connects Central Point to Ashland.

Economic Boost

Trail-based tourism has been shown to help boost small town economies. Coffee shops, breweries, bike rentals, lodging, and local businesses all benefit when cyclists roll through.

Pure Ride Joy

Riding along the Rogue River is truly magical.  A finished Greenway means more places for families, touring cyclists, and casual riders to enjoy some of Oregon’s most memorable miles.

Cycle Oregon and the Road Ahead

Cycle Oregon has long believed in the power of trails to strengthen communities and expand cycling access. That’s why we’re excited to know that Cycle Oregon supports the ongoing work of the Rogue River Greenway Foundation and to see the light that Rally will shine on the chapters ahead for the Greenway.

There are still key gaps to fill before the Greenway becomes one continuous route, and this is where the cycling community can make a difference. Supporting trail development doesn’t just build infrastructure—it builds connection. Each new mile brings us closer to a future where the Rogue River becomes a ribbon that ties Southern Oregon’s outdoor community together.
