2010 Weekend RIde
July 16-18, 2010 – Monmouth/Cycle Oregon University
Day 1: “Bridges and a Boat” (Mileage options: 27/41/50/73/87/100) Map
Today’s routes not only showcase the varied beauty of the Willamette Valley, but also several artful ways to cross streams. After taking a modern bridge over the Willamette at Independence, follow the river through the flora of blueberry fields and hazelnut orchards and the fauna of the Ankeny Wildlife Refuge.
The longest loops then take in as many as four historic covered bridges before passing through Jefferson, which boasts its own beautiful span. On the way home, all the longer routes converge on the Buena Vista Ferry for a truly old-school crossing before spinning back to Monmouth. An even shorter ride option will give families a great feel for the local landscape.
Day 2: “Farms and Forest” (Mileage options: 19/36/47/53) Map
Sunday’s routes roll through fertile farmland and then venture into the foothill forests of the Coast Range. The longest route takes a straight shot up the valley from Monmouth, turning left to Dallas and a roller-coaster loop through tree farms, orchards and vineyards. After a short sojourn south and a pass by the end of the Applegate Trail, the other long routes reconnect for a westward loop out to Falls City, the last town on the road into the forest. In the afternoon, enjoy rolling hills and sweeping turns through grass fields and wide-open spaces, from Kings Valley back to Monmouth by way of Sarah Helmick Park. A family route will provide a gentler version of the western loop.
