2009 Weekend Ride
July 17-19, 2009 – Monmouth/Cycle Oregon University
Day 1: Wine Country and Wildlife (Mileage options: 17/46/64) Map
Head north through some of the most scenic stretches of the Willamette Valley. The longer route winds through wine country, passing half a dozen wineries where you can stop and sample vintages or just attack the steep rolling hills, before meeting the medium route in Amity for lunch. From there both routes head back to Monmouth by way of lightly traveled roads that skirt Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, where you may spy critters of all kinds. The shortest route circles the area on back roads that are perfect for a leisurely ride.
Day 2: Ferries and Fertile Fields (Mileage options: 20/26/41/57) Map
On Sunday we tour the country south of Monmouth, with four routes to choose from and plenty of wide-open spaces to enjoy. The longest route heads out the Kings Valley Highway on smooth asphalt roads along the base of the Coast Range before circling back through Airlie across Highway 99; the medium route offers a sizeable shortcut to the same basic route. The shorter routes go through Helmick State Recreation Site on the Luckiamute River. All four routes end up in Buena Vista for lunch, where riders have three options for getting home through the valley’s farmlands, including an historic ferry ride across the Willamette.
