2008 Weekend Ride
August 2-3, 2008 – Ft. Stevens State Park
Day 1: Rivers and Bays (Mileage options: 15/26/39/67)
Explore the northwest corner of Oregon at your pace and your distance. Starting from Fort Stevens State Park, you’ll head toward Astoria on the Business Loop of Highway 101, crossing the Lewis and Clark River. Lunch will be at Fort Clatsop, the winter camp of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, with its newly rebuilt historic log structure. Longer loops include a crossing of Youngs Bay, a chance to climb to the Astoria Column, an inland loop on scenic back roads, or a moderate climb up and over a hill to Seaside, heading back up 101 to the park.
Day 2: The Big Bridge (Mileage options: 12/40/64)
Today offers a rare treat: a chance to ride across the Astoria-Megler Bridge, 4.1 miles long with the longest continuous truss in the world as its main span. Once you cross into Washington, you’ll follow the Columbia River to the town of Chinook for lunch, and then re-trace your route back. A longer route option heads to the Long Beach Peninsula and loops through Cape Disappointment State Park. There’s also a short “historical” route in and around Fort Stevens State Park featuring the Peter Iredale wreck plus war batteries.
