Freewheelin’ Friday | No. 1

Our weekly round-up of interesting bike news, commentary, and the best of what our favorite riders are up to.

#ThrowBackThursday – We heard from a lot of riders about yesterday’s post with an image from Cycle Oregon XIX. “That downhill after lunch was a blast!”, “One of my favorite Cycle Oregon weeks”, and “Biggest descent ever” were some of the comments that made us smile. Oregon is a scenic wonderland and we’d love to see your favorite photos from past events. Show us your favorites from riding with us on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter and tag your photos #RideCycleOregon. We’ll share them here in the weeks ahead.

Cycle Oregon is on LinkedIn – We believe bikes mean business and that Oregon is a shining example of how bicycling means more than just retail sales. Since its creation in 1996, the Cycle Oregon Fund has awarded 325 grants totaling $2,300,000 through our community and signature grants. Please give us a follow on LinkedIn to discover more about the business side of what we do here at Cycle Oregon.

Tour de Quarantine – Spring isn’t simply the start of the bicycle racing season it’s also when many of the biggest, most prestigious races take place. After a long winter of waiting many of us were bursting with anticipation for what was expected to be one of the most exciting race seasons in recent times. Professional racing, though, was the first of the major sporting leagues to postpone their events and, for a while, fans were left unfulfilled. In steps the content hero we need, professional race announcer and TV host, Brad Sohner. From his home window watching daily commuters and recreational riders on a downtown Pittsburgh bike path, Brad is announcing the Tour de Quarantine with “racing” action between Lady on Ebike, Guy In Orange, Strava Hunter, and Kid on BMX Bike. A big round of applause for Brad’s high production value and limitless enthusiasm for this event. Bike Riding as Art “Some kids are really, really bummed,” said Boulder Junior Cycling’s Executive Director Pete Weber, of the Colorado school closure and bike racing season cancellation. “They had big dreams for the season. So, we’ve been continuing to operate the team virtually.” What the coaches did was ask team riders to continue to ride for training,  with appropriate social distancing guidelines, but to use the route-recording platform Strava to sketch images. Coaches thought the kids would simply create basic geometric shapes from their rides but what the kids posted is even more impressive. VeloNews has the complete story. Follow along as we can imagine the competitive spirit will only make this better.

Here’s who made us smile this week on Instagram:

Bill Strickland@truebs may just love bikes and riding more than anyone we know. As the Editorial Director for Hearst Enthusiast Group, he oversees Bicycling magazine which has been putting out one great issue after another for as long as we can recall. Join Bill in his daily Instagram Live sessions as he “shares” a post ride beer following his daily solo (for now) rides. If there is anyone missing group rides right now more than anyone, it’s Bill. Please give him a follow and say hi.

Ayesha McGowan@ayesuppose is the first African-American female pro road cyclist ever. Her journey to the pro ranks was one of tireless determination and she now rides to inspire and encourage other African-American women and children to follow their dreams. She enjoys every ride and even in times like now she’s keeping our spirits high. Who else do you know singing songs and playing the ukulele after a demanding session on the rollers?
