Delicious Strawberries — Day One Cycle Oregon 2013

Sometimes a day’s route doles out the bucolic splendor piece by piece. Other days it beats you over the head with it from beginning to end. Today we got quite a clobbering. In fact, I can’t remember a more gorgeous start to a Cycle Oregon (of course my memory isn’t what it used to be, so don’t take my words as gospel here). Either way, each and every one of us enjoyed a magnificent helping of Strawberry Mountains today. From John Day, we went around, up, down and back.

It was a perfect day for a ride. Cool, clean, crisp air which, toward the apex of the climb smelled like one of those pine tree scented things you get from the car wash. The climb was slow and steady and the decent was not. It was, however, broken up by beautiful prairie, which one rider described as “heavenly,” which it was indeed.

The last several miles plunged through a lovely canyon into the appropriately named Canyon City before ending right back where we started here in John Day where we will enjoy another warm summer evening under the stars.
